To whomever reads this, I would like to first say that I pray you and your family find help with whatever brings you to need a place like Alpha Recovery Centers. My name is George S., but my name is really unimportant. What is important is that I am my father’s son; I am my mother’s son; and in the course of my addiction, I did great harm to those I love.

I had struggled with addiction for many years and had sought help at a multitude of treatment centers. My parents never gave up on me, but I was at point where I had given up. I arrived at Alpha with two trash bags full of clothes and two weeks worth of food. I was desperate to quit using drugs, but had little faith in my ability to do so.

It is beyond my ability to put in words the exact degree to which Alpha changed my life. Alpha offered the usual support through educational groups as well as therapeutic groups. They offered one on one counseling and opportunity to get individual help. Yet there was nothing typical about the counselors and ancillary staff of this treatment center. They taught me to explore what recovery meant to me, and helped me to find a new passion in my life. Each day, I was challenged to explore what I believed rather than simply being told what to believe in. I developed concepts of personal responsibility, integrity, spirituality, service work, and faith that have transformed my life in many ways.

I want to note that Alpha is more than a treatment center. It is a community of recovering addicts where we stay involved in supporting one another. We play sports, cards, watch movies, go out to eat, and constantly laugh with one another, but at the drop of the dime we talk about things that are very intimate to us. The community is amazing and the source of the best friendships I have ever had.

I have been free of drugs and alcohol for over eight years. Today, I work as a special education teacher, starting my ninth year in the field. I have gone from two bags of clothes to owning a house. I have gone from being unable to care for myself to raising my dog that is the source of great joy in my life. But most importantly, I stay involved with Alpha Recovery Centers and I meet every single person that walks through that door without exception, to let them know that they never have to use drugs again. To let them know that life has meaning and that they can find ones way again. I wish with all my heart that all find recovery from a disease that squashes hope and wants us dead. For this addict however, hope still lives, and for that I remain grateful for my time at Alpha.
